Sheep wool insulation
Pure sheep's wool for thermal and acoustic insulation, with no chemical additives
What sheep wool insulation is
Sheep's wool insulation is a natural, renewable fibre supplied as rolls and felts for roofs, walls, floors and ceilings. It contains no synthetic fibres, no PLA and no biocides.
Our wool is protected with the IONICprotect® plasma-ion treatment, which makes it resistant to moths and insects without using biocides.
Thermal and acoustic performance
The declared thermal conductivity of our rolls is between 0.033 and 0.038 W/mK, with densities from 18 to 30 kg/m³ and thicknesses from 30 to 300 mm, depending on the product.
Because the fibre is fine and elastic, wool offers good sound absorption, which is why it is used in schools, offices, rehearsal rooms and housing.
Behaviour with moisture
Sheep wool is hygroscopic and open to vapour diffusion (diffusion resistance μ=1): it absorbs water vapour from the air and releases it again when conditions change, without a relevant loss of thermal performance.
This behaviour is typical of natural insulation materials and must be combined with correct design of the wall or roof, including the membranes and barriers suited to each case.
An alternative to rockwool and mineral wool
Unlike mineral wool and rockwool, which are produced by melting mineral raw materials, sheep's wool is a renewable raw material obtained from the annual shearing.
On site the most noticed difference is handling: wool is cut and fitted by hand, with no need for a dust mask or specific protective clothing.
At end of life it remains a natural-based material, unlike mineral or petroleum-derived solutions.
Where it is usually installed
- Pitched roofs and lofts
- Internal, external and partition walls
- Floors and ceilings between storeys
- Timber frame and lightweight structures
- Renovation of existing buildings
- Campervans, motorhomes and mobile homes
Recommended products
Rolls and felts suited to most common applications.
Frequently asked questions
- Is sheep wool insulation suitable for the Portuguese climate?
- Yes. It is used in new build and renovation across the country. Thickness and product are chosen according to the element being insulated and the performance required.
- Do I need protective equipment to install it?
- Wool is cut and fitted by hand and needs no dust mask or specific protective clothing, unlike mineral wools.
- How does it behave in fire?
- The declared reaction to fire of our rolls is D-s2, d0 according to EN 13501-1. The wool does not drip when melting and self-ignites at around 560 to 600 °C.
