Sheep wool insulation being fitted into an internal timber-framed wall

Natural wall insulation

Sheep wool rolls and felts for internal, external and partition walls

Internal and partition walls

In partition walls and framed structures, the mechanically fixed felt fills the space between studs and contributes both to thermal insulation and to sound absorption between rooms.

The slight extra width of the rolls lets the wool adapt to the structure and wrap around pipes and cables without extra cutting work.

External walls and timber frame

In external walls and timber frame construction the wool is installed inside the structure, as part of a complete build-up with the membranes and barriers suited to the case.

Sheep wool is hygroscopic and open to vapour diffusion (diffusion resistance μ=1): it absorbs water vapour from the air and releases it again when conditions change, without a relevant loss of thermal performance.

Thicknesses and performance

The declared thermal conductivity of our rolls is between 0.033 and 0.038 W/mK, with densities from 18 to 30 kg/m³ and thicknesses from 30 to 300 mm, depending on the product.

The right thickness depends on the wall build-up and the performance sought. We can review the construction detail and indicate the product and thickness to consider.

Frequently asked questions

What thickness should I use in an internal wall?
It depends on the existing structure and on the goal, thermal or acoustic. Rolls range from 30 to 140 mm; send us the wall detail and we will advise.
Does the wool need a vapour barrier?
Whether a barrier or membrane is needed depends on the complete wall build-up and the local climate. It should be defined in the design; we can support that analysis.
